For VIU student Hunter Jarratt, a social media account with a sizeable following and somewhat niche subject matter came about rather unexpectedly.

Every year in BC, a series of contests are held for university students learning Chinese to present their language and cultural knowledge to a panel of judges.

Have you been more tired than you should be? Are you having trouble with digestive issues or chronic pain? Maybe you’ve been unable to focus or feeling abnormally sad or irritable. These are just a few of the signs that you may be suffering from stress. This is the time in the semester where many post-secondary students feel the heaviest stress. 

A decision to help his daughter’s brother-in-law with a physics course years ago opened the door to a position as a volunteer tutor with Vancouver Island University (VIU) for John Hofman.

You’re almost there! Exams start next week, then it’s time for a much-deserved break. To help you get through these last two weeks, check out the holiday-themed events happening on the Nanaimo campus this week and next. Hint: there’s lots of opportunities to get free hot chocolate!

If you’re leaving town for a while, you might want to hang on to your rental accommodation or even be thinking about making some money back. While you’re not using your room, it might be possible to get another student to rent it temporarily or even cover the cost. There are some questions to ask first:  

Angelina Jaeger expanded her research horizons for three months in Germany after earning a spot in a prestigious summer internship program.

She received a German Academic Exchange (DAAD) Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) scholarship. Angelina is the first Vancouver Island University undergraduate student to receive this scholarship and competed with students from North American, British and Irish universities. Only 320 scholarships were awarded.

Giving Tuesday is a global movement to encourage people to support worthwhile meaningful causes during a season that features holiday sales and consumerism. This year, VIU’s Giving Tuesday campaign runs from November 15 to 29, 2022. The VIU Foundation aims to raise $350,000 to support students through initatives like the Give a Meal program and emergency bursary fund. 

In honour of Giving Tuesday, I wanted to share my own giving story in the hopes that it inspires others! 

My name is Sarah Osborne and I am a fourth-year student in the Child and Youth Care program at VIU. This fall, I had the opportunity to go on exchange to the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences (Norges Idrettshogskole, or NIH) in Oslo, Norway.
